Bongi Mntambo performed ‘Spirit’ by Beyonce.
Labrinth is one of the co-writers and co-producers of this cut recorded for the 2019 film ‘The Lion King’. “A dynamic secular-gospel exhortation to ‘Rise up!’” as one writer put it, the ballad opens with lyrics chanted in Swahili by male choristers, and it was generally praised for its inclusion of African music elements. It’s also a showcase of Beyoncé’s range, so Bongi managed to bring it.
Bongi gave us the uplifting closing we were all hoping for, ripping through Beyonce’s Spirit with power, polish and grace.
She then received a standing ovation for an outstanding vocal showing, Beyonce’s, ‘Spirit’ is a beast of song to cover but Bongi made it sound like her own.
