The Top 24 contestants of Australian Idol Season 8 were divided into three groups of eight contestants. The groups then performed in three rounds, with eight contestants performing in each round, and just four contestants from each group advancing to the Top 12 finalists.

Each of the four judges was given the power to put a contestant through to the Top 12 finalists by awarding a “Touchdown”, and the other contestants progressing to the Top 12 were announced by the judges at the end of round. Each judge was allowed to award one “Touchdown” across the three rounds.
