The season premiered in February 2009 with a summer vibe and new rules.
Instead of the search happening in autumn–winter as with previous seasons, the auditions began in mid-December and ran through the holiday season.
Colin Moss was unable to be the host of Season 5 due to movie commitments and the role open for auditions.
Among those who auditioned were Top Billing presenter Janez Vermeiren, SABC 3 continuity presenter and radio DJ Liezel van der Westhuizen, television presenter and DJ Pabi Moloi – seen in SABC 1s The Amazing Date – and Sami Sabiti, co-host of Idols SA Season 1 in 2002.
M-Net made an official announcement that Liezel van der Westhuizen was to be the new host.
She was presented to viewers in the first episode of Season 5 when Colin Moss was run over by a car in a scene and she took the reins from him as the new host.

Idols SA Season 5 Finals
For the first time in a season of Idols South Africa, the show producers saved viewers hours of horror and went straight from the countrywide audition rounds to a narrowed-down Top 14.
In previous seasons of the show, the viewer-voting rounds had always started with a Top 24.
However, this time around the judges narrowed things down to just 14 contestants who were revealed on Monday 16 February 2009.

Grand Finale Voting Disaster
During the official grand finale, Sasha Lee Davids was announced as the winner, with 52.77% of the votes.
Four days later, M-Net announced that there had been a technical glitch that caused problems with the voting lines, and some of the votes that were sent before the cut-off time were not counted.
On Friday 8 May 2009 M-Net announced that the recount had shown that Jason Hartman had received 200,000 more votes than Sasha Lee Davids (of 2.3 million total votes in the grand finale recount).
After a discussion between M-Net and FremantleMedia (the format owners of Idols), Jason Hartman and Sasha Lee Davids were both declared winners.
They both received identical full prizes and this was the first time a win was shared on an Idol show.
Neither Hartman nor Davids ever appeared in the bottom 3 or 2 prior to the final.

I love and voted for him week in week out. I was very disappointed when he wasn’t announced a winner. His talent didnt give me a choice but to hinestly vote to him repeatedly. If we could all honestly vote for talent; this competition will be much easier. I glad that justice was done for Jasen. PEACE
