Idols SA 2020 Top 16 Boys song choice

Here are the song choice for the Idols SA 2020 top 16 boys.

The boys are up first, and this is what they’re singing for your votes in the debut live show!

The live shows are on this Sunday from 5pm! And the first theme is fascinating: the best cover versions of all time.

Here’s what the Top 16 boys are performing:

Brandon – ‘Dancing On My Own’

Originally recorded by Swedish artist Robyn in 2010, ‘Dancing On My Own’ was a dancefloor smash. But in the hands of Britain’s Got Talent finalist Calum Scott, it got a slowed-down acoustic makeover – and became an even bigger hit. This is the version Brandon will be taking on.

Ethan – ‘Feeling Good’

Nina Simone recorded ‘Feeling Good’ for her 1965 album ‘I Put A Spell On You’. It’s subsequently been covered by an array of artists, including George Michael and Avicii, but it’s the Michael Bublé version that Ethan will be doing. It was recorded for his 1995 album of standards covers ‘It’s Time’, an album that scored a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Vocal Pop Album.

Jooma – ‘Always and Forever’

This track was written by Rod Temperton, who is best known for writing Michael Jackson hits like ‘Thriller’ and ‘Rock With You’. Originally recorded by British funk-disco band Heatwave, it was covered by Luther Vandross on his 1994 ‘Songs’ – and it earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B performance.

Mr Music – ‘All I Could Do Was Cry’

Originally a doo-wop tune by Etta James, ‘All I Could Do Was Cry’ was subsequently covered by Ike and Tina Turner, and then Beyoncé while she was filming her role in the film ‘Cadillac Records’, for its soundtrack, and this is the version Mr Music will be tackling.

Qhawe – ‘Try A Little Tenderness’

This song was originally recorded in 1932 (!), but it’s the Otis Redding version from 1966 that’s best known. Sampled by Jay Z and Kanye West on ‘Otis’, it was covered by Chris Brown for the 2007 film, ‘This Christmas’, which he also starred in.

Succedor – ‘Emotion’

Written by Barry and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, ‘Emotion’ was originally a hit for Australian singer Samantha Sang, then released by the Bee Gees themselves on their 2001 ‘Their Greatest Hits: The Record’. In the same year, it became an international hit for Destiny’s Child.

Zahn-Reece – ‘Superstar’

This tune was a hit in 1969 for Delaney and Bonnie and was then memorably covered by The Carpenters in 1971 (after they’d seen Bette Midler perform it on the Johnny Carson show). The late, great Luther Vandross recorded a seminal version for his 2001 ‘The Ultimate Luther Vandross’.

ZanoThando – ‘I Got A Woman’

A storied song, ‘I Got A Woman’ was a hit for Ray Charles back in 1957, and it’s since been covered by The Beatles and Elvis Presley – the version ZanoThando will interpret. But expect him to nod to Kanye West’s ‘Gold Digger’, which samples the song and interpolates it via Jamie Foxx, who played Charles in the biopic ‘Ray’.
